Dilum began working as a Specialist Registrar in Forensic Psychiatry attached to Caswell Clinic Medium Secure Unit in August 2007, and had the majority of his training within the South Wales region, gaining extensive experience in managing complex, mentally disordered offenders, both in inpatient and community settings. Dilum has worked in the psychiatric intensive care ward, male admission ward and rehabilitation ward attached to the Caswell Clinic and is currently gaining experience in managing the mentally disordered female population, which includes a significant number of patients with dual diagnosis, ie patients with mental illness and personality disorder.
Apart from his time in Caswell Clinic he has trained in Broadmoor Hospital, gaining experience in managing mentally disordered offenders with significant risk. Dilum is well versed in conducting assessments to determine the level of security required for patients referred by different psychiatric specialities, including General Adult, Prison Inreach and High Secure hospitals.
Dilum’s interests range from medical law, sexual offending, dual diagnosis and assessing the effect of alcohol on violence. He has conducted research on variety of clinical issues including Dual Diagnosis and the impact of challenging behaviour on patients and staff. Dilum is keen to be involved in research with Professors’ Pamela Taylor, Bob Snowden and Nicola Gray in the field of personality disorder, with a view to informing the management of complex patients within the organisation.
Dilum has delivered lectures for Cardiff University postgraduate students and is eager to be involved in a teaching programme for Allied Health Care workers within Pastoral Cymru. Dilum will also be focussing on implementation of new evidence in prescribing psychotropic medication.
Dilum has participated in management work during his career, at times working as a Local Negotiating Committee member of the Trust and also as a medical member of the Risk Management Group of the Caswell Clinic. He has contributed significantly to clinical governance work by being involved in clinical audit, risk assessment and management work.
He has conducted assessments and provided independent reports in variety of medical legal cases. Dilum’s expertise includes fitness to plead and stand trial, psychiatric assessment of dangerousness, risk assessment and disposal under the Mental Health Act 1983.
